Galloway Ohio October Events 2026: Your Local Guide

On Sunday afternoon, October 4, the Indian Ridge area of Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park will have fly fishing lines, archery targets, mussel displays and kids in the water with nets. Three weeks later, local businesses will hand out candy from parking spaces on Galloway Road. Most of Galloway's scheduled October happens between those two afternoons, and it moves in one direction. It starts at the creek on the park system's calendar and ends at addresses run by Prairie Township.

Here's the month in order, with the address for each stop.

  1. Thursday, October 1: Battelle Darby Creek and Prairie Oaks switch to seasonal hours. Sensory Exploration for ages 1 to 5 runs at Westland Area Library that morning.
  2. Saturday, October 3: Dr. Hasan Jeffries speaks at Westland Area Library.
  3. Sunday, October 4: Darby Creek Day at Indian Ridge, 2 to 5 p.m.
  4. Sunday, October 18: Prairie Township Pumpkin Swim at 5955 West Broad St.
  5. Saturday, October 24: Prairie Township Trick Or Treat Trail at 146 Galloway Rd., 4 to 6 p.m.

The Month Opens With the Parks on a Shorter Day

Starting October 1, Battelle Darby Creek and Prairie Oaks run on their October through March schedule, 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you walk the dog after dinner or get in a last loop on the trail, the parks now close earlier, and those hours hold until spring.

The bison are a common reason to visit Battelle Darby Creek. Metro Parks names two public viewing spots. The Greenway overlooks the summer pasture, and the nature center balcony overlooks the winter pasture. The park system doesn't say which pasture the herd uses in October, so if you're bringing guests to see them, you may have to try both spots.

One Free Afternoon Covers the Parks' Whole October Calendar

The Metro Parks October 2026 event calendar has nine entries. Darby Creek Day is the only one at Battelle Darby Creek or Prairie Oaks. For people who live closest to these two parks, that makes October 4 the one scheduled park event of the month.

It's a big one. Darby Creek Day runs 2 to 5 p.m. at Indian Ridge, 2705 Darby Creek Dr., Galloway. Everything is free and open to all ages. The Metro Parks list includes:

  • Archery and atlatl
  • Fly fishing
  • Insect catching and catching macroinvertebrates
  • Creeking
  • Large fish and mussel displays
  • Ambassador animals
  • Crafts and face paint
  • Food trucks and live music

The event page doesn't mention advance registration, and it reads as a drop-in event. The FAQ answers the weather question in one word.

"Is the event rain or shine? YES!"

The page also says food trucks will be there for anyone who gets hungry or wants a sweet treat.

The scavenger hunt is run by the Darby Creek Association, and finishing it earns a prize. The group is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit founded in 1972 to protect, preserve and restore Big and Little Darby Creeks. It co-sponsors Darby Creek Day with Metro Parks every year. That conservation focus matches the day's activities, which center on the creek itself, from mussel displays to macroinvertebrate sampling.

After the Creek, the Calendar Moves to West Broad Street

Before Darby Creek Day, the month opens at Westland Area Library, 4740 West Broad Street. On Thursday, October 1, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., the branch hosts Sensory Exploration for children ages 1 to 5. On Saturday, October 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Dr. Hasan Jeffries presents "Defending Democracy: Public Libraries, Public Schools, and Public History." Since the talk is the day before Darby Creek Day, a family could fit both into one weekend.

Two weeks after the creek event, the next township date is a few miles east on West Broad. Prairie Township's Pumpkin Swim is Sunday, October 18, at 5955 West Broad St. There's a floating pumpkin patch and pumpkin decorating. Published sessions include 2:30 to 3 p.m. and 3:30 to 4 p.m., and each costs $7. Each session is only half an hour, which makes this the most structured event of the month. Darby Creek Day gives you a three-hour window to show up whenever you like. The Pumpkin Swim gives you a time slot, so it's worth booking early.

West Broad is also where Galloway's next coffee option is coming. Dutch Bros plans a shop at 5344 W. Broad St. in Prairie Township, and NBC4 reported in June that it will be drive-through and walk-up only, with no indoor seating. ABC6's latest reporting gives a fourth-quarter 2026 opening and no specific day. It could open this month or later this year, so watch for it rather than planning around it.

The Month Ends in Parking Spaces on Galloway Road

The last scheduled township date is the Prairie Township Trick Or Treat Trail on Saturday, October 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. at 146 Galloway Rd. It's free and walk-up. Each participating local business or organization gets two parking spaces for its candy station, and families walk from one station to the next. The township has a Trick Or Treat Trail page for event registration.

Pathways Credit Union is one of the participants listing the event. Darby Creek Day is built around the creek. The Trick Or Treat Trail is built around the businesses and groups that set up stations, so the same two-hour window gives families a look at local organizations they might not otherwise stop at.

Here's how the month moves. It starts at a Metro Park on Darby Creek Drive, goes to the library and a township facility on West Broad, and ends on Galloway Road. The farther into October you go, the closer the events are to the township's commercial streets.

What Hasn't Been Set Yet

Beggars' Night is still open. As of NBC4's central Ohio trick-or-treat list, updated September 30, Prairie Township is marked "TBA." The township's October 2026 online calendar lists only meetings for now, with no resident trick-or-treat date or hours. If you're buying candy or planning porch decorations, keep an eye on both pages. The Trick Or Treat Trail on the 24th is the only Halloween event in Prairie Township with a published date so far.

If the kids want a pumpkin patch after the Pumpkin Swim, Circle S Farms in nearby Grove City is the closest one in this roundup. The Columbus Dispatch's September 24 fall guide says the farm's season opened September 24, with $5 pumpkins and $11 general admission. The farm's website lists Thursday through Sunday hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and a season that runs "through October 25th." That page doesn't give a year, so check before you plan a late-month trip.

A quick guide to planning the month:

  • Can only do one weekend? Choose October 4. It's free, it's the only scheduled event at either park, and it happens rain or shine.
  • Have kids who need a set time? Book a Pumpkin Swim session on October 18 at $7 each.
  • Planning around Halloween? October 24 is set at 146 Galloway Rd. Beggars' Night isn't set yet.
  • Using the parks after work? They close at 8 p.m. from October 1 through March 31.

If a Sunday at Indian Ridge has you wondering which parts of Galloway are closest to the creek or to the township's events on West Broad, the team at Castro Group is happy to walk through it with you, in English or Spanish, and answer your questions quickly. Let's Connect.
